Hi:

I need some help and advice about the 70-200 VR. When I look at my lenses, the thing that jumps up is that I do not have the 70-200 VR. This is driving me up a wall. The following are my reasons for not getting the lens, so far.

The Nikon 70-200 VR is a lens I would like to have to complete my lens collection, if not for the price of ~ $2,500 (70-200 + TC 1.4x.) I see two types of applications for the lens. One is for close ups. I prefer my 105mm VR because its minimum focusing distance is 12” as opposed to 5’ for the 70-200. Let us say I can use VR effectively, with the 105 + monopod, down to 18” – 24”; it is preferable, imho, to the 70-200. The other application is to get to subjects that I cannot physically get to. I do not shoot in this mode very often, except for Zoos. For that I have the 70-300 VR, a lens that I do not use that often. However, if I had the 70-200, it might be a different story – I do not know.

The Sigma 100-300 is an alternative, but I view it as a tripod-lens and there is a lot of walking in a Zoo. VR + Monopod are a must for me – not that young anymore.

One alternative is a probable Nikon 70-200 f/4 VRII, a lens not made yet. This is not such a wild expectation because Canon has it, the reviews are excellent, and it sells for $1,100. However, I need at least 300mm to justify replacing my 70-300 VR. I have another problem. A possible 70-200 VR f/4 + 1.4x TC takes the lens to a fixed f/5.6, worse than my 70-300. The latter is faster because it is variable aperture: f/4.5-5.6. Therefore, I really need to start at f/2.8 to take it to f/4. In other words, I’m back from where I started.

My question is: “Am I missing something here?”

Thanks,

Ramesses
