On your question about which would be a better lens, the 75-300mm Nikkor f/4.5-5.6 Micro Nikkor or the newer 70-300mm f/4-5.6D ED Micro Nikkor, it has been answered by many reviews, favoring the second you mentioned.
The two-touch D ED is surprisingly good for the price (US$300 with USA-warranty at B&H); the Extra low Dispersion glass certainly helped to improved upon the original design.
