Just picked up a new 70-300vr and I am displeased. My images are too soft. A little history. Last year I bought the18-200, I put it on my D200 and WOW was my 1st impression very sharp. I sold it last month thinking their are better lenses out there. Maybe my 1st mistake. I then bought the 70-200VR and was WOWED again, BUT it’s too darn big. I work at a local college and even showed the photo professor it. He also said the pics are excellent but again too darn big. Alas I returned it----Never though I would do that after a post I wrote on returned items . Anyway, I thought I would use my 18-70 which I am very pleased with and get the 70-300VR. I also have the 105VR which is excellent! And of course a old 50mm 1.8. Received the lens today 3/19 and again images are too soft as compared to the good old 18-200. So I wonder IF I got a bad 70-300 or maybe it’s the nature of the beast. Hard for me to realize that after all the raving reviews. I only did handholding no tripod as of yet. I do have a tendency to use full zoom i.e. 300mm---just a bad habit. Or maybe I am expecting too much from the 70-300?—any comments??—Is there an easy test, without setting up a physics table---?
PS--it is a overcast day here in CNY------

I also use a flash indoors at around 100mm, and still soft images.

Thanks!!
