I intend to get the AF-S 500mm f/4D IF-ED
but I can see the dilemma with the AF-S 600mm f/4D IF-ED
Same aperture, however the price differential is US$1,700 !!!

Photon - I am using the F5 w/ the 500 f4 AFS - what a great combo, and equally as good with the TC14E. I opted for the 500 over the 600 not only because of the extra costs, but I also travel quite a bit and like to hike. You won't be carrying the 600 very far unless you like self-torture. Even the 500 can get heavy carrying it in a backpack with all of your other gear.
Make sure your tripod is capable of supporting these bigger lenses. As far as image quality - both are obviously professional lenses and top of the line. Many of the bird images and smaller critters on my website were shot with the 500 or 500 / TC14E combo - you can check those out at www.grafphoto.com.
Good luck with your decision.
