I'm an angry man, but rather than put my Nikon equipment on ebay, I'd rather try to make a change by starting this thread.

So, the D60 is here. The third camera to be released since the D40 dropped proper support for AF-D lenses.

A year and a half, and still nearly half the Nikkor range can't be used fully on a number of cameras.

What's going on here? I bought into the Nikon SYSTEM (ha!) by buying the D50. It offered me the chance to use all the Nikon lenses that I need.

Now the number of cameras offered that won't give full functionality with my primes is increasing.

Surely a lens bought in 2007, from the same people who made the camera, should be able to provide autofocus? Yes, really it should. Don't kid yourselves otherwise.

The type of photgraphy I do requires wide apertures and autofocus. That's why I bought into Nikon - to get the best lenses. What do I do if I have to replace my D50? I have to spend a great deal more.

What about the D80 replacement - will that alow me to have autofocus with my AF-D lenses? If I have to replace my camera, it'll already be a steep hike in price for what I paid to enter the Nikon system. If the D80 mark II doesn't have a focus motor, I have to pay over a grand for a camera that does (D300).

A year and a half! I notice the 60mm Micro has been updated to AF-S, but that's one lens in a year and a half.

I really don't mind if I have to upgrade a lens or two within reason to have full functionality. But when will this happen? Is it actually planned, or are Nikon just going to release the odd lens or two over the next few years before they realise that they'll need to do it for all of them?

What is the next step for me? Should I put purchases on hold while there's the gap between what the lens system provides and what the cameras can accept? Why won't Nikon tell me?

This issue has been here for a year and a half now - so what is the next step for Nikon?
increase the choice for the consumer - make lenses fully compatible;
or reduce choice for the consumer - you only get to really choose what lenses you buy if you pay a lot more money

It's time people started putting pressure on Nikon, rather than stating the 'yes, but you can use all Nikon lenses, but in manual focus' drivel.

I'm not going to be pressured into using large, cumbersome VR lenses which are of no use to me. What is Nikon's reply?

What I want is either of the following:

upgrade of AF-D lenses to AF-S; or
incorporation of focus motor to all Nikon DSLRs

I personally think the former is achievable, but I want Nikon to let me know what's happening.

I've said enough for today, and am now turning my rant control down before I upset the neighbours.

Yours

Angry of Gloucestershire
