Now that Nikon has done the impossible with the low noise of the D3, done the unexpected but welcomed (FX sensor on the D3), and done what was long overdue (VR on the super teles) it is now time for them to get the whole lens lineup revised. In its heyday, the Nikkor lineup was unmatched by anything else. nikon, please get it back to that point now that you're deriving great income from the D3 and D300.

In my opinion, here is what I'd like to see Nikon do with its lens lineup over the next few years. I've got 29 new and revised lenses listed here:

The budget pro zoom quartet (slightly slower apertures and longer ranges as an alternative to the f/2.8 pro zooms):

17-45/4 AF-S (replaces and updates 18-35mm)

24-120/2.8-4 AF-S VR-II (pro-quality; replaces the existing 24-120 and 24-85mm lenses with one)

60-200/4 AF-S VR-II (bring back the budget pro midrange tele-zoom)

100-300/2.8-4 AF-S VR-II (a fairly compact pro-quality tele-zoom with fast
aperture)

The tele-zoom for DX:

45-135/2.8 DX AF-S VR-II (gives the 70-200/2.8 back to DX cameras and compliments the 17-55/2.8 DX)

Updates to existing pro tele zooms:

70-200/2.8 AF-S VR-II (update with VR-II)
80-400/4-5.6 AF-S VR-II (update it with AF-S!)

Prime updates (make them the finest primes):

20/2.8 AF-S (minor update)
24/2.8 AF-S
28/2.8 AF-S
50/1.4 AF-S
50/1.8 AF-S (might as well update the budget lens)
85/1.4 AF-S VR-II (go all-out and give it VR!)
85/1.8 AF-S (might as well update the longer budget lens)
180/2.8 AF-S VR-II (minor update plus possible VR)
300/4 AF-S VR-II (VR update)

New fast and ultra-fast Primes:

17/2 AF-S (a really good and fast ultra-wide)
24/2 AF-S (bring back the fast wide!)
28/1.4 AF-S (bring it back for the D3x!)
35/1.4 AF-S VR-II (introduce with the D3x also!)
50/1.2 AF-S VR-II (yes...bring back the ultra-thin DOF and add VR!! )
135/1.8 AF-S VR-II (go all-out on this one for the D3!)
300/2 AF-S (bring it back!)

New PC shift primes:

24/2.8 PC shift (we need a wider PC shift lens and 24mm is THE landscape focal length!)
50/2.8 PC shift (why not a normal PC shift lens along with the others?)

New micro lenses:

70-180/4-5.6 AF-S VR-II
200/4 AF-S VR-II

Super-tele and ultra-tele primes:

400/4.5 AF-S VR-II (bring back the "compact" fixed 400mm and add VR)
800/5.6 AF-S VR-II (bring it back...you used to have one, and Canon is coming out with one. Moose Peterson would buy this one!)

Finally, don't stop making the classics:

17-35/2.8 AF-S (14-24 is not a replacement)
80-200/2.8 AF-D (nice and "cheap" alternative)
105/2 DC (we need the 105! and, competitors have nothing that touches the DC lenses)
