Your profile doesn't indicate if you have a tripod yet. If not, I suggest budgeting for a good tripod and head.
From Nikon, your best bet for more reach within your budget is likely a 300mm f/4 AF-S and a TC17 teleconverter.
If you are willing to consider third party lenses, either the Sigma 80-400mm OS or the 50-500mm lenses are likely candidates.

I certainly agree with the recommendation for the superb Nikkor AF-S 300mm f4, ED prime lens with a x1.4 or x1.7 tele-converter as well as the alternative third-party lens recommendations, sturdy tripod and ball head with detachable lens plate. Carbon fibre tripod is recommended to reduce weight if you are hiking. Also leave the 55-200mm at home. It's superfluous for this trip.
