I usually go to Thom Hogan's web pages to get good reviews and tips regarding Nikon gear. . . that said here is what he has to say when he talks about your lens. His test shows that wide open is not a good idea but one or two stops in proves to be sharp as ever. . . read it and see what you think.
I did have this ED AF-D lens too and honestly, some of my favorite images that I've taken were with that lens. I typically shot it at around f5.6 too (but did shoot it occasionally at f2.8 without bad results). I usualy shot it on a monopod as I was using it for sports (I never had the AF-S version, so don't know how they compared in shooting sports, but this lens was plenty fast enough for what I was shooting ... football, baseball and lacrosse). I didn't use it as much on my F100 (but it did wonderfully when I did), but found it most of the time on my D2X. And in fact, it was on that camera more than it was off... I only sold it to get my 70-200, but still think of that lens many times when I'm shooting on a telephoto of that range... Fantastic lens, great color...
