I was photographing birds at a TVA dam a few weeks ago and ran the batteries down to the point where the LCD was displaying a half battery symbol. I charged batteries the night before the outing. I was using Sanyo Eneloop batteries which lasted for 3 rolls of film. I'm using my Sigma HSM 300 f2.8 + tc and HSM 150-500 with OS turned off. It's my understanding that HSM is equivalent to Nikon's AFS. Is this normal behavior for an F5 or a battery issue? When using my AFS 24-120 VR they last much, much longer.
