Hi, joined the other day. Recently purchased an F4. Superb piece of equipment. It will take me quite a while to learn my way around it - small bites at a time!
Question: I need to get a quality zoom, say 28-105 or thereabouts for around $400-500 (if realistic!!!). While a Nikkor would be nice, I'm open to other makes as well,it's the end result that counts! Anyone got some suggestions? Thanks, Guitflip - Tallahassee, FL.

Duh, after posting I did some more searching and came up with the same answer. I'm going down to the Fl Keys the end of the month and want a walkabout. The 28-105 Sounds perfect.

The 28-105 is a nice little lens. A bit slow, if you're planning to shoot in low-light, but it does its job and it does it well. It also has a decent macro mode, going down to 1/2 life-size. You can probably get a nice used example off KEH.com for $150 or so. That'd give you an extra $350 to put toward other items...

My favorite walk around lens on both the F4 and a DX is the Nikkor 24-85 f2.8~4D. You may get lucky to find one used for just at or around $500.00. There was a AF-S G lenes of this but at f3.5~4. It was usually around $350.00 if you can find one, plus it doesn't allow aperture control except in S or P modes. If you do need more long reach then wide, the 28~105 sounds nice but I haven't seen one even new or used from Nikon. Plenty of 3rd party ones and for under $200.00, but can't speak of their image quality. Maybe somebody here can feed back on the Sigma, Tokina, or Tamron.
I used a 28~85 f3.5~4.5 AFi on my F4S and it was nice. Not pro glass, but looked darn near good for a zoom of its time. Used for as little under $100.00.
