Problems with F3 and FA; tips for maintainace?
I have recently aquiered an F3 and FA body with lenses from my aunt. The equipment has spent the last 9 years in my aunt's closet, and I've doug it out and want to use it. But there are minor problems with them
The F3 has problems with using the light meter. When the shutter is pressed halfway down the light meter should be turned on, right? But it seems that parts of the dials and the contact between power supply and light meter is poor or not functioning. The light meter disappears after 16 seconds, and then I can't get it back on - it "timed out" and I have to wait at least 5 min before it works again. Also the body bayonette is not "clicking" when mounting the lenses. Perhaps the lock is full of dust and dirt?
The FA came with a flash, but I can't turn the dial to th M250 setting on the exposure wheel; it seems that the button is stuck.
Any suggestions for simple maintainance, or do I have to delivere it to a specialist?
Great web site, by the way!

As for the F3, the meter does indeed turn off after about 16 sec.; it is strange it does not turn on immediately after pressing again the shutter button halfway. If it was mine, I would try first of all to change the batteries. Funny the display is still visible, it was supposed to die after about 10 years, so Nikon said when they put the camera on the market... but it actually seems those displays are not aware of that and just go on working... If the mount does not click, it probably has the pin locked by dirt; it is a very basic device, so I can not believe it failed in some other strange way. It is just a spring loaded pin. Or maybe the spring failed, but I can not figure out how it happened. Check also the small recess on the lens to be clean.
As for the FA, I do not know it directly, but maybe it is got a small pin on the dial to push to set it on M250, just like the F3 has one to unlock from A, B and T.
Probably after such a long time they will both need to replace the light tight foam gaskets and mirror dampener; this is an inexpensive job for a Nikon specialist. Be sure to check. Otherwise, it may turn out in light filtering through the back and little pieces of black smudge sticking to the mirror. No damage at all for the camera, just the risk to ruin your pictures. If you see the black particles on the mirror, do not try to clean it by yourself but go to the specialist.
Anyhow, since both cameras seated unused for such a long time, I think it is advisable to have them checked and cleaned. A small investment will make you sure to have them proficiently and reliably serving you for decades.
