Had a question about the black covers on the F3. They are brass, painted? With what? - enamel, powdercoating, acrylic, carbon black?

Situation is, I have a pretty well-worn F3P. Trouble is, it doesn't show it from far away. Up close, well, some dolt - *ahem* - well-intentioned previous owner covered up a lot of the brassing and wear marks - and poorly at that. I'm hoping for a solvent or something I can try to remove just the re-paint, without touching the factory enamel, if possible. Alcohol? Acetone?

Thanks,
-Dave
