The MD-E is a low speed winder (about 2 frame/sec) while the MD-14 is a 3.2 frame/sec drive. I had an MD-14 for a short time and it worked very well on both my FG and an EM I had at the time. I sold it to finance another purchase.
It takes 8 AA cells, and they need to be in good condition - when I first tried it with slightly used cells it would not turn over at all. One thing about the MD-14 is that it does not rewind - you still have to do that manually
There are a number of off-brand winders advertised (they come up on Ebay every now and then), but I haven't seen one in the flesh.

I've got the MD-E and like it a lot. It is slower than the MD-14 but it's purpose for me is so I can keep my eye in the viewfinder, not to get multiple fps. I believe it's also cheaper. It takes 6 AA's and like the MD-14 you need to manually rewind. I think with either one you'd be happy. If you've got big hands (like me) it makes it easier to hold the small FG. For a price reference, I picked mine up in excellent condition for $65 - but I think that was a pretty good deal.

You might want to have a look at the following links for details on the FG and the related MD-E and MD-14 motor drives.

MD-14 - http://mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/emfgfg20/fg/fg4.htm

As for off-brand winders for the FG, I once had an off-brand winder for my first nikon, a FE2, (bought mainly because as a student I couldn't personally afford the MD-11 or the upgraded MD-12) and I remember that it didn't last very long... died because of a motor malfunction, so be wary of off-brand winders. If possible, check for the build quality if you decide to go down that route.
Hope this helps.
