A friend gave me a nikon 28-70mm lens he had not used for quite some time. It's nice and clean, but between 50-70mm the focus ring is a little hard to turn. Any suggestions what I can do about that? Preferably something I can do myself, as I don't have a nikon service centre here in Bali. I have read somewhere that sometimes it's necessary to use some grease (lube). If someone has experience with this, please let me know. I am quite technical so working on a lens does not scare me (too much).
thank you for any suggestions

It sounds like the problem is with the zoom ring not the focus ring.
How stiff does it get?
Did you try working the zoom ring back and fourth several times and see if that helps.
Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

I had a lens that had a rough spot zooming; apparently it had been bumped while it was extended and as a result the gear had a slight stall. I had to have it repaired by my local repair shop (authorized) under warranty.
Which 28-70 do you have? I'm guessing it is a variable aperture version, is that correct?
