I just thought I would caution everyone that Christian Lewis is a scam artist and should not be trusted...please add him to the list of scam artists in the sticky thread at the top of this board. Please don't fall victim to him!!
I agreed to buy his D2x and sent payment via PayPal on July 20th. Since the payment was sent, all attempts to communicate with him have failed and I have not received the camera.
Now normally, I would give this guy the benefit of the doubt for a little while longer, but I have found out (by chance) that he has also scammed a number of people (around 5) on photo.net during this same timeframe (both on the D2x as well as a 70-200 VR). Since I do not normally frequent that website, I was not aware of this until I happened to be communicating with someone I had recently sold my AFS 300mm f/4 to...he was also a victim of the same guy!
Anyway, I have filed a claim with PayPal, but I'm pretty sure that I am going to lose some money on this transaction. Fortunately, more than half of the value of the sale was paid by credit card, so I am in the process of getting a chargeback issued. However, I used my existing PayPal balance (the proceeds from the sale of the 300mm) to fund part of the transaction, which I fear will be lost...especially since there are a number of people with open claims against him.
Anyway, I just thought I would let everyone know since he has done a number of successful transactions on this site in the past (although based on my searches, it does appear that there was an issue with the most recent one with regards to damage/missing parts). Also, he comes across as being legit (see his website www.christianlewis.com)...so I didn't want anyone else to get scammed by this guy.
One month ago I had the same exact thing happen to me with Christian Lewis on a D200 he was selling. After 3 weeks I was able to get my money refunded, but with absolutely no communication with the seller at all. I hope you can get your funds back, and thank you for addressing this.
Over time I have received a variety of communications from members regarding Mr. Lewis. If those of you who have dealt with him will post the facts (emphasis on "facts") in this thread I will try to distill them and make a decision regarding adding him to the "Failure to deliver merchandise" topic at the top of the forum. If such a decision is made (I will confer with other Team members), this will become the thread of record. Please stick to the facts, keeping emotion out of your posts.
Facts: dates, equipment, condition, currency amounts, currency denominations, links to the relevant threads, etc.
Please do not expect any immediate action, as I am about to leave town for a while, and am extremely busy both at home and elsewhere these days.
As always, I encourage all members to search for information using our Nikoscope search engine regarding feedback on potential buyers and sellers.
Thank you for the information. Based on a quick search of Mr. Lewis' previous posts and transactions on this site, I could not find any real evidence of wrong doing. About the only negative feedback prior to my post was that of a shipment being damaged and missing some parts...which could easily be interpretted as on honest mistake.
I really wish the others who had sent you communications in the past had done so in a public manner. This may have "saved" others from experiencing grief with Mr. Lewis...at a minimum he would not appear as an upstanding member of this community. That is why I felt the need to inform others of my bad experience with him.
I have been contacted by the other people that were recently scammed by him on photo.net, so I will be forwarding my recent correspondence from them to you for your examination.
Greg, I made a mistake in my post. Please post all information in this thread - don't email it to me.
Links to threads both here and elsewhere are encouraged.
Again, I encourage ALL members to provide feedback on their transactions in the appropriate thread, allowing for the vagaries of life (holidays, sickness, etc.). Our members can then easily use our Nikoscope search engine to find the relevant feedback.
Seems this person has been offer items for sale on this website for some time and transaction issues have been pointed out. Why is this person able to continue listing items for sale here up to today, 21 Aug 07?
Not sure if this was reply to my email-if so, no Im not confused! -All you have to do is click on Reubens link to see Mr. CL complaint files. -I seemed to remember MR. CL listing items on this website in around April to June 2007.
-It seems to me, best thing to do is not allow sellers to list their items if there have been numereous complaints about the particular seller whether complaint is here or other websites. Getting burnt is not solution to the problem.
I think it's a very prudent move to keep this particular thread afloat at the top of the forum, what with the upcoming spike of buy/sell activity that's sure to be triggered by the new Nikon camera releases coming in the next day or so.
Mr Lewis seemingly had all the bases covered , and appeared to be a reputable and upstanding Nikonian, on the surface. He's obviously no dummy, and is still active on his MySpace page, therefore the potential for more of his nonsense is front and center.
So, I have a question. Why isn't this guy in jail? I just called his cell phone (which is listed on his still-running photography website) and he answered. Have the North Carolina state police been involved? Certainly between the harm done to Nikonians and this fellow on SmugMug there is ample evidence to apply charges. Is anyone pushing to do so?
