Welcome. Like you, I'm a new member, although I've had an account here for years--just never used it.
As for the lens, I suppose it depends on what other runners are in your stable. I have the 24-120mm f/4 VR and the original model. It used to be my standard lens for most photography.
When I got my D700 2 1/2 years ago I also got a 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 as my general purpose lens. The 24-120mm hasn't seen much use since then.
I also have the Holy Trinity (14-24mm, 24-70mm, 70-200mm, all f/2.8) and when the situation calls for it I'll carry one or more of those.
For interior shots when traveling I find it's hard to beat that 16mm f/2.8 Fisheye. The 14-24mm gives great wide angle, but with the Image Trends Fisheye Hemi plugin I get some pretty nice shots--with the distortion remediated.
Hope this helps.

Hi, thanks for your response. As part of my upgrade to the D800 I sold my 28-300. I always preferred that to the 24-70 which I also had at the time. Whilst the 24-70 is an excellent optic I always found it 'heavy' on the D700 and rather restricted in focal length. So I used the 28-300 more often. I have now come round to the view that a 24-120 f4 is likely to be just about right for my photographic needs.
Welcome to Nikonians! Thanks for the intro. Glad to have you with us. Congratulations on your new D800. The 24-120mm f/4 is optically excellent and works very well on the D800. Many here use it instead of the 24-70mm since it has a wider zoom range, VR, and is smaller and lighter. Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!
