Any recommendations for converting .jpg files to .nef so that they can be processed in ViewNX? I have tried converting to .tiff and then to .nef with mixed results, e.g., some files seem to be corrupted.
NEF is the RAW recording of the sensor image. Jpeg and TIFF are created form a RAW image with the in camera settings applied by the camera's processing algorithm. There maybe no program that can undo the camera's internal processing. All cameras may have some internal processing not duplicated by editing programs or other cameras.
If you want a NEF then have the camera write it at the time the shot is taken.

As far as I know it can only be done in CNX2. Just open your jpeg in CNX and 'Save As' a NEF file. I have often done this after processing a panorama for example. It gives you the advantage of non-destructive editing, just as if it was shot as RAW. Although it is a NEF file, it is NOT exactly the same as a NEF out of camera.
You cannot Save As or Convert a JPG to a NEF in View NX2.
You can convert it to a TIFF or another JPEG using the Convert function.
You can edit a JPG in View - but some functions like white balance and exposure are not available.
The Save AS function does not work well in View NX2 - it saves the file as a smaller file than maximum size and best quality. I would copy the file first and then make any edits to the copy.
As suggested, Capture NX2 has no such limitation. If you save a JPG or TIFF as a NEF in Capture NX2, all the edit steps are reversible. If you save the JPG the steps cannot be reversed. If you Save As a JPG you can specify the file name and quality desired.
