I am using ViewNX 1.3.0 to view my pics - D700 NEF’s. When I first open the program I get the following window:
Internet Connection Error “Your request cannot be completed because the service could not be found or did not respond. The service might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your network settings.” Then I can choose between two buttons, “Try Again” or “Cancel”
I hit the cancel button any where between 2 and 8 times before the window finally goes away for good.
Does anyone have any ideas why I get this message and what I can do to get rid of it?
I have deleted the program and reinstalled the program and I still get the same window.

You might try the following: In the Help menu of ViewNX, clicking ‘Check for Updates’ should bring up the Nikon Message Centre. Click Tools and then Options and set the ‘Automatic Check Period’ to ‘Never’. Hope it works...

I cured this in Nikon ViewNX 1.4 on Vista by....
1- Un-installing all Nikon software through add remove
programs (View NX1.4 & Nikon Transfer 1.5)
2- Editing the registry to remove all references to Nikon
3- Re installing View NX 1.5 and Nikon Transfer 1.5
after the re installs the problem had gone
Be aware that there is a common update mdoule for all Nikon software, so you may need to ceck each Nikon product to see if you have any set to check for automatic updates. If you shut this off, you will need to manually check for updates.
Did you ever resolve your problem with the internet connection error. I'm having the same issue. Since it doesn't impact the program's performance...it is basically just a nuisance when opening...I don't want to go to the effort of uninstalling the software and editing the registry. Hoping you might have found another solution.

I run Apple stuff here, but: I installed the complete Nikon set (Nikon Transfer, ViewNX, CaptureNX2, Camera Control Pro) on a Windows laptop for testing purposes, and found that I was having trouble with my firewall. All the Nikon apps loaded a second app, that goes out to he internet and checks for updates; my McAfee firewall manager was blocking the updater. I was able to make an exception in the McAfee program settings to allow the updater to function. If you were lucky maybe msconfig would show a startup entry you could remove from the startup group. Or, it may be another issue entirely.
I've also battled this since I upgraded to 1.5 in February on a windows 7 PC. View NX2 also has this issue. I've dealt with Nikon tech support on two separate instances to no avail. If you create a new profile it will work. Not a solution in my book.
I noticed that the internet errors popped up while bringing up the images. Based on this behavior I navigated to a folder without images, and exited Nikonview.
NikonView corrected itself. Doing this reset whatever was screwed up.
