Hi All, I'm new so if I'm missing another thread please divert me. When I process jpg images in View NX2 and then use 'Save As' I don't get any choice of what image size to save at. It automatically drastically reduces the file size. Is there a way to save at the original file size? I'm probably missing something obvious so any ideas gratefully received. I'm shooting in NEF now but have got a lot of jpg images. I can't use Capture NX2 because of the well know issues with i7 core processors followed extensively in other threads.
Thanks, Charlie The convert icon seems only available in the view panel. I want to keep the edits I've made before I close the adjustments panel and then Save As a new file leaving the original untouched. If I Save then close the image(to get back to the view panel), then Convert I lose the original. Sorry if I'm being a bit thick.
You're not crazy - I tested and got the same result.
I took an 8.7 mb JPEG image, made a minor edit, and chose Save As using the icon on the bottom right of the screen to the right of the Reset button, I got a 1.9 mb file. It looks fine, but I assume there is a default quality setting being applied.
I looked at preferences and did not see an option.
It did not pull settings from my Convert option - the last image I converted and the current settings showed highest quality and no resizing.
Anyone else with an idea? It could be a "bug" and should be reported to Nikon Support for a fix later.
When I open convert on a NEF I see a quality slider in the window. I just tried it and moved the slider to highest quality and left all other things the same and saved the JPEG and got a 3.65 MB JPEG. The NEF was 12.6 MB
I've had no problem using Convert for saving NEF's as JPEG's at the highest quality setting in View NX2. That's Convert though and not Save As. I've converted individual RAW images or batches using the convert tool and typically end up with an 8.7 MB file.
When I subsequently edited one of those 8.7 MB JPEG files and used the Save As icon, the resulting file was just 1.9MB. With the Save As tool there is no option for quality or sizing in View NX2 - and this is the only way to Save As. You would expect that a JPEG would Save As and default to the highest quality setting or have a dialogue box - like Capture NX2 - that allows you to make that decision. It's as though the prompt for the dialogue box is being skipped and the default is something like Good but not Highest quality.
I think it is a bug as the functionality exists in Capture NX2 as a simple step in the Save As process.
Eric I misunderstood the problem. I do not use VIEW NX2 to edit my photos, only to ingest and rank. Everything else is done in CNX2, so I have not come upon this problem for as you say this does not happen in CNX2. So I think you are right it is a bug, and I too have found no way to set it, at least not yet.
'Yes, when saving an altered file in View NX2 the resulting file size will appear to be smaller than the original. Unfortunately there is currently no option to adjust this, but Nikon Japan are aware of customers concerns with regards this usage.
With regards to Capture NX2, i'm sorry but unfortunately at this stage there have been no announcements as to an update release date..'
For me this is a major issue which makes View NX2 unusable with jpg files.
The usual Nikon reply of 'Yes we know and can't be arsed to fix it' is infuriating.
