I have been shooting raw and processing the raw files in various engines such as apple's Aperture, Adobe Photoshop, and Capture One for about 9 years now.
I just went and shot some images to try out Nikon Capture NX-D Beta. These files are at a better starting point and in some cases a better endpoint just loading them into NX-D then I seem to be able to achieve with the other raw converters. All the photos look exceptional and completely natural.
I'm shocked. I don't particularly care for the program, but the photos just look great.
Am I essentially witnessing the value of the software being able to read the in camera settings at the time I shot these RAW files?
Now you know why us CNX2 users are so bummed out. CNX2 is even better than Capture NX-D. What you must realize is that NO program other than Nikons RAW processors (VNX2, CNX2 and now NX-D) can read nor apply ANY of your camera settings, that includes Picture Controls and ADL. Everyone else applies an APPROXIMATION of what they think your image looked like on the back of your camera and they have no way of replicating ADL at all. The main difference now is that CNX2 was totally non destructive and all edit steps were stored in the NEF, no side cars or other BS. CNX2 would ship 16 bit TIFFS with all those edit steps baked in to any other program that could read TIFFs. I am shocked that so many people chose to ignore CNX2 which was unique in the use of U-Point Controls that eliminated the need for layers and allowed anyone to create professional PP with very little learning. We all think NX-D is lame in comparison because it cannot do selective editing and currently does not support plug ins. CNX3 seamlessly incorporated NIK CEP 3.0 which meant any of those effects could be used in conjunction with all the other features in CNX2.
I have decided to continue to use CNX2 as my RAW converter in conjunction with Photoshop as I always have. I have never needed anything else and if at some future date I can't use CNX2 I'll use NX-D as the RAW processor and continue in Photoshop. I have nothing new to learn as I am proficient already in Photoshop and I have no need for a catalogue program.
