USM & Picture Controls
Been using Capture NX2 a while but would like to hammer something out about Picture Controls using this basis-
D700 - in camera is always set to RAW & Neutral Picture Control with sharpening at minimum ie -1 as opposed to zero.
(because I read somewhere that Nikon do not recommend zero setting due to an effect on the camera sensor whatever)
I ingress into Capture NX2 and set sharpening to zero in NX2.
What happens when I change PC to Standard or to any other PC and what are the ramifications on output when using USM settings?
Thanks for looking

Here is what I do:

You would click the advanced settings for the new picture control and again change sharpening to zero.
I set in camera sharpening to whatever is most helpful to me when reviewing images for sharpness on the camera back LCD. I use a setting of 3 but that is personal taste. Some like a higher setting.
With a setting of -1 (??) I would think it would be difficult to evaluate sharpness.
When I apply USM, I set the in camera sharpening to zero. If I change the Picture Control directly then I change the integrated sharpening to zero.
I have several saved settings that applies a Picture Control with sharpness=0, and also adds a USM step with a basic default setting. That saved setting could apply the same Picture Control I use in camera or a different Picture Control. I have a similar saved setting for each Picture Control I frequently use.
The saved settings simply save me a few clicks to get the Pic Control sharpening turned off.
Those basic saved settings are accessible from the Batch-->Load Adjustments menu item.

After saving a setting, you need to click Edit-->Preferences-->Manage Settings.., and check the check box next to each setting you want displayed under the Batch-->Apply settings option. They do not automatically display there.
