I agree, and it is predictable that many people will change all their gear at great expense before they identify their needs and how another camera or any camera would solve the problem. Instead of attacking composition, technique and light, the first inclination for most people is to assume a higher end camera will make up for the above factors.
Given that one has learned how to optimize lighting, scene interest, and composition, the need for a new camera usually evaporates.
I would be safe to say that any print shown by itself made with files from a D7000 would be no less interesting or boring if taken with any other DSLR today if the basics of photography are applied. For those expecting everything to sudden turn our obviously better by switching formats or cameras within a format, they will likely be disappointed,
However, if someone has a specific performance detail that impacts their work, they can be pretty sure that a positive change can be achieved. For example is high speed sequences of shots are needed for a client, a D4 would improve results and would justify the expensive upgrade. If someone prints very large fine art prints to be viewed close, a D800 is going to help achieve the goal. For general photographhy, it usually comes down to a "want" as opposed to a "need".
