Brian, In the sprit of the "special relationship" between Yankees and Brits, I'm certainly not trying to make up anyone's mind. Heaven knows the US economy could use a lot more consumer spending! I'm just saying I wouldn't purchase a camera at the very beginning of the product's life cycle. (This is coming from a guy who still owns and shoots a Nikon F2 Photomic!)
As you noted, my unstated assumption may or may not be valid. As my dear old Dad used to say, "You could walk out the door and get hit by a bus." I never understood that analogy because we didn't live near a bus line! He died quietly at the ripe old age of 90, so I guess the odds were in his favor.
