"RE: D600 and High ISO"

We have had bad photo weather the past few days, cloudy and rainy. I shot a cross country race on Friday at ISO 3200, and a soccer game on Saturday at ISO 5000.

Understand that my default ISO is 100 for the cleanest image possible. I had to go up this high so that I could use my tele-zoom and still get a reasonable shutter speed to stop the action.

I noticed a bit of noise at 3200 on the cross country pictures, which were in the rain, under a tree, and not particularly light. Nothing bad though as an 8X10 print came out looking very nice.

The soccer game at ISO 5000 was a bit more noticeable on a tight crop, but not objectionable. More like what I would expect with an ISO 400 color print film circa 2005.

I was shocked at the prints from both events as I was expecting the worst, but they were very usable after a moderate crop followed by an 8X10 print.

I will NOT use ISO 3200+ on a routine basis, but it let me get shots this weekend that I wouldn't have been able to get otherwise.

I was tempted to print larger, just to see how they would hold up, but couldn't bring myself to burn the ink on snapshots of the kids sports. Now if I had gotten that one great shot . . .

Regards,

Patrick
