Sounds like you are embarking on a complex project. I hope that you can gather the additional equipment, cables, and software you will need to test your system before the temperatures drop?
Essentially you will be "tethering" your D800 or D600 at a location a distance away from your computer. Issues that you will need to think through carefully:
- you will need the proper ac adaptor and power connector for your camera, as the camera will need mains power in your observatory for the time-exposures necessary. in addition, you will need some kind of heater to keep the camera sensor within Nikon operating temperature specifications.
- you will need to research what the maximum USB cable length is that you can reliably use to attach the extension to your camera's USB output connector.
- I am totally unfamiliar with the Maxim DL and DigiCamControl windows software that claims to let you control your camera from the computer. Check out Nikon's software Camera Control 2, which would allow you to also use a WiFi connection between your camera in the observatory and your computer:

Good luck
