If I am reading the manual correctly, after setting the af-m switch to AF:
- Press the af-m button and rotate the main/back dial to pick af-s or af-c depending on your subject.
- Press the af-m button and rotate the sub/front dial to pick "single point"
- Make sure the "dot L" switch around the joystick is on the dot
- Use the joystick to pick your focus point.

To pick a new focus point, the focus system has to be active which may mean you need to tap the shutter button if the camera has been idle.
