I agree, we are partially talking our individual needs along with a very straight forward cost/value balance equation. Some people, such as yourself, are willing to pay the premium for the D800E. And it is a premium.
On resolution - your formula is not how it is calculated. To get 50% more would require a 54 mpixel camera - you have to add 50% more pixels on the length and the width - ie - a 9000x6000 pixel sensor! Can you imagine the file size!
To double the resolution of a D600 requires 4 times the number of pixels - 96 mpixels or a 12000x8000 pixel sensor! I am sticking with 24.5 for the foreseeable future.
