For me, the D800 was not an option. 24.5mpixels is plenty of resolution, the D600 has very good build quality, and I would rather spend the extra money on a new lens. Plus, I got in on the camera/lens Xmas special that basically got me a brand new D600 for $1500, ($1,996 for the whole kit).
I have not been disappointed for one moment with the camera.
That said, those are my reasons. If you think you will regret not getting the D800, just buy it.
