If your requirement is pro level portraiture, are you sure you are looking in the right direction. An fx body with a 105 or 135DC or 85 1.4G and proper lighting would be in another league.
The shallow DOF, excellent pro lenses available and even the flash system on the D600 or 800 would be an entirely different animal than the xe1

If you do not have full access to raw and the proper PP tools the demo shots will tell you very little about you you will get. There are few cameras that would appear much different than any other in small displays or prints such that your D300 is capable of what you need, as is the D7000, even more so and still better, the D800, used D700 or whatever the D600 turns out to be,
