Don,

For HDR brackets, the Promote Control is a better choice over the CamRanger because with the Promote Control's optional shutter release cable you can capture the brackets much faster than the CamRanger.

The CamRanger, on the other hand, has much more functionality over the Promote Control.

I got the Promote Control first, and then got the CamRanger later.

Ken's workaround is interesting, but you would need to move the command dial at least once for 4 to 6 brackets or twice for 7 to 9 brackets. This creates the danger of a slight movement of the camera during capture and a more time consuming sequence capture.
