DX provides greater depth of field in the same composition.

Think about it this way for a typical image that fills the frame on both an FX and DX camera with the same lens. For my example I'll use a Nikon 200-400 on both a D300 and a D800. For illustration, we'll use a subject distance of 100 feet - typical for a large mammal like an elk or deer.

With the D300 at 250mm and f/4, my DOF is 7.75 feet (roughly half in front and half in back of the subject.

For the same framing on an FX sensor of the D800, I'll need to zoom to 375mm. But at this focal length on FX, my DOF is just 5.14 feet. For the DOF to be equal, I would need to stop down beyond f/5.6 - a little more than one full stop.

So on one hand you might stop down a little more using FX to have the same DOF. With a large wading bird or bird in flight, that is a likely strategy. Or you might use the shallow DOF to your advantage and have a nice soft background - as with a large mammal or a small bird.

I ran into this a couple of years ago in the Smokies with Bill Lea. We both had the same lens and were standing side by side shooting the same beautiful bull elk. My image with a D300 was a discard - the background was too busy. And his was a keeper using the D700 because of the nice soft background and better isolation of the subject.

If I have enough reach, I'd much rather have FX in order to achieve the desired subject isolation and soft background.

For macro, I would have less effective magnification with FX. Using a Nikon 105 on a D800 with a subject 15 imches away, DOF is 0.36 inches at f/16. Using a D300 from the same distance, my image is more magnified so my DOF is just 0.24 inches. Or I could move back to 18 inches and have the same DOF as the D800 but the field of view would be a little different.
