Michael my experience may not apply to you but here goes. I sold off many years accumulation of Nikon "stuff". Film bodies, DX bodies, DX and FX lenses, etc. I did this last year after deciding to go exclusively FX. I kept a couple of my pro FX lenses, AFS70-200VR F2.8 and my AF 14mm f2.8. In Dec 2012 I bought the D600 body and the 16-35mm F4 lens. Being a landscape shooter my 14 and the 16-35 seemed perfect. Wide was once again wide and my world was complete. Or so I thought. Recently I seem to have developed a desire to do more bird photography. Bought an AFS 300mm f4 but found that even with the TC 1.7II it was not quite enough and I couldn't afford the exotic telephotos and there are no shops in this area that rent lens. What to do. As mentioned earlier it can be a real pain switching between camera bodies if they are not alike. Along came the D7100. It is very similar to my D600, controls, weight, physical size and a similar sized 24mp sensor albeit in DX. The clincher for me was the 1.3 crop. I bought it. I now have two bodies each very good at what I use it for. I've had no dust/oil problems with my D600 and am prepared to clean the sensor myself (Copper Hill is great to deal with) if any issues arise. The D7100 is a joy to shoot and the 1.3 crop is a bonus. An extreme example is this little experiment I tried. D7100 on a solid tripod, 300mm f4 lens with the TC1.7II added to it and 1.3 crop. I focused on the padlock on my garden shed door 100m away. The name of the manufacturer on the bottom of the padlock is in letters 4mm high and I could clearly read the name. I am more then satisfied with the combination of bodies I've chosen. Isn't NAS wonderful. Good luck with your search.

Bill

Cold weather photography makes a VR lens your best friend. Think violent shivering. :-)
