The earlier commentary on how the camera calculates space pretty much cover it. Here's another aspect, at least to my way of looking at it.
I have mine set to 14 bit lossless and just finished installing a new RAID 1 NAS box on my computer - let's face it - 24 megapixels needs a lot of room!
For me personally, I want the most color depth and dynamic range and it is my view I will maximize the data available to process in LR4.3 by shooting the camera this way.
I can say I have found the D600 is hard to blow highlights or shadows - I mean really hard. I have not tried 12bit for any length of time or lossy compression, but I know from the past that Nikon does discard some highlight data in the lossy compression.
