>My local dealer (UK) said 1 week best 3 weeks worst case.
Very respectable I think. I had heard some horror stories here in the US but they were just that apparently. A friend just told me he got his D4 back from a service in 2 weeks.
>I personally think there is way too much hysteria over this >"issue" and I'm saying that as someone with a minor >oil smear on mine. Dust is a complete non-issue in my book.
I would definitely not consider this a non-issue since it is tested and confirmed on several sites and can and does absolutely affect picture quality. It's just something a new camera shouldn't do. I would agree with you about the hysteria part though! It seems a lot of people new to DSLR's are expecting no dust ever on a sensor. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't that model is out yet!
>I was suggesting I might send mine in from curiosity only >instead of a wet clean myself, purely to see what the >worksheet says when it comes back
I would hazard to guess you might see "Checked and cleaned"! Not worth the time IMO.
