In DX mode the cropping is done in camera.
You get what you see.
It could be that you are able to compose better on the smaller image (blown up) thru the viewfinder.
What might work better still is to zoom in on the image with your LCD in LiveView before taking an FX picture,
then crop a more select portion of the resulting image.
