Use a flash if it is allowed - even your onboard with a Gary Fong puffer will work well with a little practice.
The advantages to this -
1.You can shoot higher ISO, or auto ISO with auto shutter speed - a fantastic feature of the D600. The flash will keep things looking cleaner, and you can use higher shutter speeds. 2 Greater focal length options when you have to take a different sort of photos or do not have an optimum position for framing a shot with the 50mm.
In this scenario where a flash is allowed, the 28-105mm would be the best choice due to the focal length range though I personally would probably use the 24-85mm VR.
The problem with the 50mm is that it is fixed focal and you will constantly have to interject yourself into the people of the awards ceremony, (ie, be in the way), to frame images and that might not be appreciated. Another issue is if you plan to use it's low light capability, you will be stuck shooting wide open with a very shallow DOF. Since you indicate you are new to this, that will result in a lot of challenges with who is and is not in focus.
Just another perspective,
