My first thought is that given the low light conditions you are shooting in, accurate focusing is going to be a problem. Obviously the smaller apertures will get you "acceptable sharpness" across large portions of the picture, you may be looking for better than "acceptable".

However, it should be noted that viewing at 100% is not a good way to judge sharpness. 50% might be a better option.
