To answer Neil's question: I use AF-On button exclusively and assign the Fn button to AE-L/AF-L and all works just fine.
The point I have been trying to make is there might be a D400 with fast frame rates and heavier build but it will not fit in the price range that is being requested. Heavy cased bodies do not scale with volume the way that electronics does. It is going to be higher than a D600 since IQ will also have to be competitive and that is the current performance standard.
A used D3s is probably the closest to what you are seeking and is in line with the lens investment that most BIF and wildlife shooters commit. I do not know many BIF shooters but the ones I know all have D3 or D4 and a lens collection that dwarfs the body costs. It is a sad fact that this particular specialty is very expensive for serious pursuit. My preferred subjects are relatively cheap to capture:studio, portraiture, event and theater. The primary reason I do not get it wildlife and bird photography is the entry costs. My longest lens is 200mm despite having $10k invested in lenses. The field-craft portion of the specialty is, for me the easiest to bring to the table because I grew up with that on a daily basis.
All the discussions are pretty academic however, you have the camera that you want at the price you want so all if fine. Those jumping on the D600 have a different more general set of requirements, mostly centered around IQ for which Nikon has come through with flying colors, basically a D3x in a cheaper body.
Regarding Nikon losing ground to Canon because of not having a heavy duty lower res camera, they seem not to be interested in filling that gap either. They have a 1Dx, that is it in the heavy duty realm.
It is entirely possible that both companies found that the BIF is such a specialized field that has a high entry cost, it did not make sense to produce a low volume camera that would not have the costs scaling advantage, when they already have a camera that is price balanced with the lenses. Low volume is probably right since many who were potential upgraders were already siphoned off by their cost effective alternatives like the D600. Currently the D800 is the price and feature replacement for both the D700 and D3x for most shooters, that is viewed as a real bargain, top IQ for the price of the intro price of the D700. I don't see the overwhelming demand for another FX body now so if anything is added it will be a $1700-2000 DX but it won't have a pro body at that price. If enough buyers would agree to $2700 for a pro body DX, it might be made but from what I hear, people are complaining about that price point(and forgetting how much the D300 costs when introduced, more than a D700 price now). Nikon knows there is a lot of resistance to a DX pro body price so that would give any product planner/manager pause before pitching it to the upper management.
