Not a straw man argument at all. The $2700 figure for a Pro body DX might be low. Everyone expects a pro body to have the D4 AF, which means the same processor, same metering 91k sensor, same AF sensor and more horse power. Essentially a D4 with a $500-700 less expensive sensor. High FPS means a lot of enhancements to the mechanics, shutter and many subsystems including wider data pipe. It is not just putting a all magnesium case on old innards. All the subsystems of a new DX fast system would be upgraded to the parts used in the D4 except the sensor and possibly the lack of integral grip.
I keep hearing D400 should be a DX D4 as the opinion expressed. What other features would you accept being removed or from a consumer camera to get the price down? They borrow a lot from a mass produced consumer camera to get a high performance D600 where IQ was the main design criteria. If pro body is the main criteria, costs are not as easy to lower when there are no subsystems from mass consumer products to borrow from.
A D700 is introduced to day, with the current value of the Yen an dollar, it would have been well over the $3k mark. What would you leave out without being called a deal breaker camera for specialty shooters who want very specific things or else consider it useless? General purpose cameras are easier to design for than specialty models because of not only the smaller potential market but how splintered that market is in demands.
My prediction, a D400 will be late and it will either be expensive or not please a lot of people who have very specific requirements but want a low general price. It is not just Nikon who is waffling on this high end Dx, no one has one or likely to jump in first.
There is room for a $1700 DX but that does not buy a pro body or 9 fps second or a D4 AF system. To get to that price it will need to borrow a lot from other cameras that are not in the D4 level of seriousness.
