The AF-On function on the D7000 has served me well for the last 25,000 shorts with it, and no adjustment in habit was required to move to the D800. There might be room for a DX camera in the Dx format since there is a gap of $1000 but it will not be a pro body, that is why I added the figures of what the premium of pro body would cost. A pro-sumer body might be in the distant future in the Nikon line but it likely is not going to be a DX version of a D4 since the electronics based features are more easily brought down in cost than body enhancements. None of the brands are trying to compete in that specialty however. If they fitted the D4 AF in DX, with the needed high end metering and focus sensors and added processing horse power, the difference in price is the sensor which is about $500-600. So my estimate of a $2700 pro body DX might be low. Speed in DX is easier to come by since the shutter has shorter travel and mass so 9-10fps is possible. How big IS the market for a pro body fast DX? I suspect Nikon is not jumping into that gap for a good reason. None of the other brands have made a play for it either. A sensor for such a model would probably have a higher per item cost for R&D since the often cited D3s or better low light spec will be a tough nut to crack and it would be used in a moderately small production item. If it had a D7000 sensor, would that please everyone? It is very good but not as low light suitable as any of the current Fx sensors
When the details of the product, market size and reasonable features for a sub $2000 price point are all considered, it is a bigger juggling act to leave out the right items and include the right items to satisfy a smaller group of shooters who all have specific make or break criteria.
