I think Nikon has done a lot of customer research before laying out the design goals of these cameras. The DSLR market is not really growing so increased revenue comes from market share growth in a stable stagnant market.
They probably discovered that capturing a new class of first time Nikon buyers with the emphasis on image quality is a better way of getting that market share than appealing solely to current Nikon owners who have less incentive to change or upgrade.
Several people who value their preferred current cameras due to handling familiarity have voiced their opinions well. For them, the features they have now at the price they paid originally is the sweet spot for them. How many of them are going to spend $2800 for a D300 replacement if it has a pro body? Or $4500 for a high IQ quality D700 replacement in a pro body? Lighter weight bodies is the future in Nikon's read on the market, which agrees with the market assessment of Canon and Sony also.
For those who value and need speed, AF and pro body they make an excellent solution, the D4. If it is in fact a need, it is very reasonable compared to the price of a D3 when it came out factoring in cost of living and relative value of their currency. People regularly spend 10 times that on a car that gives no return on investment and having almost no functionality over one selling at 1/3 the price. It is a matter of priorities.
I think Nikon is being smart with this, particularly after seeing Canon's response to the D600. The preview of the 6D suggests that they were taken by total surprise by the performance of the D600 and price point. Expect a big increase in Nikon market share and Nikonians membership by all the new blood being attracted to Nikon for the first time. Market share means lens sales even to those who are satisfied with their D300 or D700 so Nikon took a gamble of angering them by expanding ownership and selling lenses to all of them, which totals more than any body, for products that are less price sensitive as camera bodies.
