A number of photographers have said that long exposure noise reduction algorithms are not meant for use at night and recommend not using them. Kamil Tamiola is one, who has done some beautiful nightscape work for National Geographic. I've always used it in the past, but after seeing his video, I'm going to try some shots without it.
