"RE: Star Shots"
The 50mm is too wide for decent star shots, it's just not wide enough and due to the focal length, you're limited to roughly a 15 second exposure. I use a 16-35mm f/4 with a D700 and I get excellent results. I'm going to rent a 14-24/2.8 but the main advantage it really give me is a lower ISO which on a D700 isn't much. Here is a link to some 14-24mm astronomy shots, shot at f/2.8. It's not my flickr, but the Dave does some amazing work. He uses a Nikon D800 and is from my neck of the woods.http://www.flickr.com/photos/daves-f-stop/sets/72157630953089238/with/8379965594/
