To get pin point stars rather than streaks, there is something called the rule of 500. Divide 500 by the focal length of your lens. So, at 24mm you can expose for 20.8 seconds before the stars begin to streak, at 50 mm it would be 10 seconds.
I have the rule of 500 calculations as well as the settings for my panorama head on a small laminated card that I carry in my pack.
