I am new too. But before to shot I will:

1. To check out infinite distance of the camera + lens with tripod {at max. aperture any thing at and more than 100-150 m must be sharp}. If not, the camera + lens not adjusted properly
2. To google "photograph + night sky" to learn specific astronomical aspects and technique night sky shooting.

If I am wrong, please professors correct me.
