I don't think that's necessarily true. I believe it goes more to particle size and perhaps pixel density than format size. For example in my "If not Lubricant...Then What" thread I provide a sample image taken at f/8 where there were 4 spots easily picked out in a cloud covered sky. And if I took a shot of a clear sky you probably could detect quite a few more that were hidden by cloud detail.

In fact I would think that when down sizing for posting of a full capture an FX sensor would have an advantage in that it receives less enlargement than an equivalent pixel dimension DX image. So the same size partial would occupy less pixels.

But in either case having particles show up in such wide f-stop settings means the particle is most likely quite large I would think.
