You can download and install the free Adobe DNG convertor and convert your NEF files to DNG and they will then open with earlier versions of ACR and thus PhotoShop. That's what I'm doing so far (CS5). Not sure it will be my longterm workflow, typically I do end up upgrading PS.
I just can't handle the Nikon software UI.
If using a Mac, view folders in 'List' view by 'Kind' and it is easy to sort JPGs from NEF from DNG. There's all sorts of other ways to quickly group or select images by file type. I usually trash the NEF files as DNG are smaller and supposedly preserve all the info of the original. But you could just keep the NEF files too if storage space isn't a concern.
