Hey Brian, thanks for your reply and the different look on things. I'm by no means advanced in photography or anything, but I can definitely tell if a lens has a focus problem or not. Maybe not everyone can, so if that 's your point, I agree. Nikon has a great document (the one with the book and the ruler) concerning AF Fine tune, I think anyone can have a look and test his lenses, it's so so easy. The one thing to remember though, is that the test needs to be done on a tripod or a steady surface to eliminate hand shake/ motion blur factors.
I also agree with your point concerning zooms. I advice testing with focal lengths one regularly uses, make small corrections and evaluate the full range each time a setting seems to work. Now, with primes, things are a lot more easy I guess. Cheers
