1st of all a little history. I’ve been a Nikon user for more than 20 years. Last film camera I had was a F100. Last digital was the D300.
Had the D300 for 4 years before selling, never cleaned the sensor, never needed to, no spots.
Just received my D600 Kit. Just going over it BUT, my 1st impression is the build quality. I guess I like something substantial in my hand like the D300, this is not the same with the D600 IMO. I am used to the D300 controls too---but can easily relearn them with the D600.
On the other hand Pics so far are great, I am just using a 50mm 1.8 for now and some of the pics are quite not that sharp, most likely me and I need to play a bit more. I have not even opened the 24-85 it came with, but I’ll use it within a few days. I ordered from Crutchfield. I specifically asked for a serial number of 305XXXX, they sent me a 304xxxx. Even before I mounted a lens I really eyeballed the inner box area and I did not see anything “dust” Time will tell if dust appears, as I have not done any “dust testing” yet.
I am having a little concern thinking I should have bought the D800 but as many of you have pointed out body’s come and go but lenses can last a lifetime. So do I return the D600 kit and get the D800? I am not sure? I’ll play with the D600 a bit more and who knows? Spend 800.00 more and get the D800 without a lens? Time will tell.
My habits----Grab the camera and shoot, mostly handheld shots. I disagree with some of the comments that the D800 is better on a tripod----just use VR lens and bump up the shutter speed is my theory.
My lenses as of now
NEW 24-85----may sell this if I keep the D600
70-300 VR
50mm 1.8.

I would sell the 24-85 and get a 16-35VR. VR is a must for me especially if I’m thinking of the D800.

Thanks for reading and take care.
