I've had no issues at all - do you get a thumbnail during the import phase? If not, then I would say, yes, your current install is not reading the files correctly. I'd personally then reinstall the app, (repair under Windows), to see if that resolves the problem.
I had a weird crashing problem with D600 videos and LR4.3. In my case, I reinstalled quicktime and rebooted. Problem solved.
